Summer Rising 2022

This summer, all MLs/ELLs should receive instruction targeting language and literacy development and access to grade-level content through an integrated English as a New Language (ENL) co-teaching and/or standalone ENL instructional model over the summer. Principals in Charge (PIC) can review the RSMR report in ATS  that has been updated to include ML/ELL information. This helps receiving summer sites with program planning and hiring decisions. PICs should review the guidance below or see this Summer for MLs/ELLs FAQ.

  • Grades K-8: schools should program ELLs at “Entering” or “Emerging” English language proficiency in grades K-8 for standalone English as a New Language. Sites serving entering and emerging ELLs in grades K-5 should use the National Geographic Panorama Social Studies digital curriculum.
  • Grades 9-12: all ML/ELLs in grades 9-12, regardless of proficiency levels or other designations (for example, SIFE or dually designated), should be prioritized for summer programming that can increase their language, literacy, and content area learning so they return in September ready to engage in the new academic year. Schools should also offer programming that addresses the specific needs of ELL subgroups: Newcomers, SIFE, Long-term ELLs, and dually designated ELLs.
  • In addition to the ENL instructional component, students enrolled in a bilingual education program during the regular school year should be offered summer school in a bilingual setting. Schools should refer to the ELL program of service for the previous school year to determine if the hiring of bilingual certified staff would best serve the ELLs participating in summer learning at their sites.
