Dear families,

If your child was born in 2020, they can attend 3-K in fall 2023! Before the 3-K application opens in late January, we encourage you to learn about the four 3-K program settings. Today, we’ll spotlight Family Child Care programs (FCCs).

FCCs are home-based programs that offer 3-K in a home setting by a licensed, qualified, child care provider. Each Family Child Care provider works with a Family Child Care Network organization that partners with the Department of Education and provides instructional resources, coaching, and family support. If an FCC is listed in MySchools, it offers a public 3-K program that provides free or low cost early care and education for NYC families.

FCCs admissions priorities include current students, siblings, applicants who receive social services from the provider, and applicants who live in the district.

Families may choose to enroll their children in home-based early childhood programs because of their many unique strengths:

  • Children can maintain strong relationships with caregivers by continuing in the same program from six weeks to three years old.
  • Children can interact with other children, including siblings, in a mixed-age setting.
  • Children can begin their early education in a familiar setting before transitioning to center- or school-based pre-K, if that is the family’s preference.
  • Families can have access to programs that offer longer days and years to meet the needs of work or school schedules through Extended Day and Year seats.
  • Programs may also offer early dropoff and late pickup services.
  • Families may find that home-based programs best reflect the language and culture of their community.
