Dear families,

If your child was born in 2019, they can attend pre-K in fall 2023! Before the pre-K application opens in late January, we encourage you to learn more about the settings that offer pre-K. Today, we’ll spotlight New York City Early Education Centers (NYCEECs).

NYCEECs are community-based organizations selected through a rigorous evaluation process that partner with the DOE to provide pre-K. They may be located at private schools and daycares, parochial schools, and others. If a NYCEEC is listed in MySchools, it offers a public pre-K program that provides free or low cost early care and education for NYC families. Many NYCEECs also offer Extended Day and Year and Head Start seats for families who are eligible based on income and needs. Some programs also offer early pickup or late drop off services.  Visit a program’s MySchools page for more information.

All NYC children born in 2019 may apply for admission to NYCEECs. Current students at the NYCEEC, siblings, and applicants who receive social services from the organization that runs the program receive priority for admission to each NYCEEC.

You might consider this setting if:

  • You’d like to send your child to a program run by an organization with strong ties to your neighborhood and/or community
  • You’re interested in options located close to where you work or go to school, not just where your family lives-there is no geographic priority for NYCEECs in pre-K!
  • Your family receives social services from the organization that runs the center
  • You need early drop off or after school options for your child—many programs offer early dropoff and/or late pickup.
  • You’d like different seat options such as School Day seats, Extended Day and Year, or Head Start seats.

Want to learn more? Join us at our virtual events on elementary admissions on January 12, 26, February 1, or 15. For event details, visit our pre-K admissions website. In the weeks ahead, we’ll send a series of updates and reminders, including highlights of other pre-K program settings for you to determine the best fit for your child and family.
