RE: Queens Borough President’s Community Board Application Now Open! Deadline February 16, 2023

Good Evening,

The Queens Borough President’s Community Board applications are now open! The application deadline is February 16, 2023. Under the NYC Charter, the Borough President can appoint two people per board and the  minimum age is 16 years old. The community boards of the New York City government are the appointed advisory groups of the community districts of the five boroughs.  Queens has fourteen Community Boards.

Some of the duties of the Community Boards are to decide what areas a new school will be constructed, advise on land use and zoning, participate in the city budget process, and address service delivery in their district to name a few. The City Charter also allows boards to submit their own plans for the development, growth, and improvement of their communities.

Community boards each have up to 50 volunteer members appointed by the local borough president, half from nominations by City Council members representing the community district (i.e., whose council districts cover part of the community district). The Community Boards also have several committees like the Education Committee, land use review and budget committees, police and sanitation committees to name a few. Plus these committees also have Committee Chairs that members can apply for within the committee.

Each community board is led by a district manager, with an office and staff, whose primary purpose is to coordinate the delivery of services to the community. Each borough also has a borough board, composed of the borough president, council members from the borough, and the chairperson of each community board in the borough. This is a volunteer position with a one evening a month commitment for a meeting.

All new applicants will receive a phone interview from a member of the Queens Borough Presidents Office. Upon completion of the interview, and application review, final candidates will be notified of their appointment by April 1, 2023.  If you have any questions, or need a physical copy of the application,  please reach out to the Director of Community Boards Maricela Cano at mcano@queensbp.org or she can be reached at (718) 286-2974.
