UFT Parent Leadership Workshop
Parent voice is a powerful tool in education advocacy. Queens parents and caregivers are invited to a free training about the many opportunities for parent leadership within the school system. Come learn how to use your talents, skills and power for the betterment of our children, community, borough and city.

UFT Black History Film Series:
“Rosedale: The Way It Is” The UFT Queens borough office will offer a free screening and discussion of the film “Rosedale: The Way It Is,” a documentary detailing the struggles Black families faced moving into Rosedale, Queens during the 1970s. This is part of the UFT’s Black History Month film screening series, which includes three more events throughout the month.
Date: Thursday, Feb. 9
Time: 4 to 6:30 p.m.

UFT Financial Literacy Workshop
The UFT Queens borough office will offer a free financial literacy workshop for parents and caregivers. We’ll discuss how to invest your money, save for retirement, fund your child’s college education and more.

Black History Month: Family Legacy and Memory Boxes
Celebrate Black History Month by creating a special keepsake to honor memories and discuss family history. This is just one of the free and family-friendly events going on every day at Queens libraries. You can find more on the online calendar.

Get live mental health support
The UFT’s BRAVEline provides live support by phone or by text to students who experience, witness or perpetrate bullying. Students can contact the BRAVEline Mondays through Fridays from 2:30 to 9:30 p.m. by calling 212-709-3222 or texting “BRAVE” to 43961.

Video contest for middle and high school students
The UFT’s Be BRAVE Against Bullying program invites middle and high school students to create 3-to-5-minute videos sharing their experiences with bullying and intolerance. Winners will receive cash prizes for their schools and attend an awards ceremony at UFT headquarters in May. Submissions are due by Wednesday, April 19.

Get free homework help from the UFT’s Dial-A-Teacher program
The UFT’s Dial-A-Teacher program offers free homework help from teachers in all subjects for all grade levels. The teachers on our hotline offer help in English, Bengali, Chinese, French, Haitian-Creole, Russian, Spanish and Tagalog. The hotline can be reached at 212-777-3380 and is open Mondays through Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m.

Scholarships and opportunities

$5,000 UFT scholarships for public school students
Academically excellent and financially eligible students are invited to apply for $5,000 scholarship awards from the UFT’s Albert Shanker Scholarship Fund. This year, for the first time, we’re able to offer scholarships to graduating seniors regardless of immigration status. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, Feb. 28.

College scholarships for Black students
The Executive Leadership Council offers scholarships ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 to Black undergraduate and graduate students with corporate leadership ambitions. Applications are due by Wednesday, Feb. 15.

College scholarship for Black women in Queens
The National Association of University Women Flushing-North Shore Branch high school seniors of Black or African American descent who are women to apply for a one-time scholarship award. Applications are due by Friday, Feb. 3.

Voices of Queens: Teen Podcast Program
The Queens public library invites young adults ages 12-19 to join the staff of its Voices of Queens Teen Radio Podcast, a podcast station run by teens, for teens. The program will run from Feb. 13 to June 30 at Central Library, 89-11 Merrick Blvd., on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m.
