Dear families,

We hope you are doing well! Both 3-K and pre-K applications are now open, and as you explore program options for your child, we invite you to learn more about the range of health supports offered in different early childhood settings. The following is a brief overview of the types of supports typical of each setting for 3-K and pre-K programs.

  • New York City Early Education Centers (NYCEECs) are community-based organizations that partner with the New York City Department of Education to offer 3-K and pre-K. They are required to have basic first aid, CPR, and Epi-Pen administration-trained staff on site. Additionally, when an enrolled student requires medication during the school day, NYCEEC staff will obtain Medication Administration Training (MAT) to serve that student. These programs are generally supported by the Office of School Health Early Childhood Health Director, who may advise on questions related to health policies, medication administration in programs, Section 504 accommodations, and providing care for children with special health needs.
  •  District Schools and Pre-K Centers have full-time nurses on site. These schools are supported by the Office of School Health Directors, school-based 504 Coordinators, and paraprofessionals as needed.
  •  Family Child Care programs (FCCs) are home based programs (for 3-K only) that are required to complete first aid and CPR training and may be trained in the administration of an Epi-pen. Additionally, when an enrolled student requires medication during the school day, FCC staff will obtain Medication Administration Training (MAT) to serve that student. These programs are supported by the Office of School Health Early Childhood Health Director on an as-needed basis.

If your child has medical needs during school hours, we hope to support you early in the enrollment process to ensure appropriate supports are in place for the start of the school year.  Please contact EarlyChildhoodHealth@schools.nyc.gov with any questions about health supports available for your child’s medical needs.  We are eager to help!

Best,

DOE’s Division of Early Childhood Education
