NYC Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit Newsletter – 02/13/2023

Dear fellow New Yorker,

Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the family of NYPD officer Adeed Fayaz, who passed away on February 7th. Officer Fayaz, a five-year veteran of the police force, was assigned to the 66th Precinct in Brooklyn. He was married and the father of two small children.

A staggering more than 36,000 people were killed, including a family from Queens, N.Y., along with a reported tens of thousands injured in Turkiye and Syria after a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck those countries. Mayor Adams delivered remarks at the American Turkish Eyup Cultural Center’s Friday prayer for earthquake relief for Turkiye. We stand with those who’ve lost family members and friends and share in their grief. If you wish to contribute toward relief efforts for the victims of the earthquake in Turkiye and Syria, click on this link: Help Now NYC

Highlights From the City Hall Press Office:

First-ever Mayor’s Office Of Child Care And Early Childhood Education:
Mayor Adams reaffirmed the city’s commitment to families by creating the Mayor’s Office for Child Care and Early Childhood Education. The new office will be led by Executive Director Dr. Michelle Paige and builds off of Mayor Adams’ Blueprint for Child Care and Early Childhood Education by focusing on ensuring New York City families have access to equitable, high-quality, and affordable early education and care.

Joint Effort to Combat Proliferation of Illegal, Unlicensed Cannabis Dispensaries:
Mayor Adams and Manhattan D.A. Bragg announced a partnership with local law enforcement and elected officials to combat the proliferation of illegal, unlicensed cannabis dispensaries across the borough of Manhattan. NYPD filed complaints against four unlicensed establishments selling cannabis in the 9th Precinct after an officer observed the sale of cannabis products to underage individuals. Manhattan D.A.’s office mailed letters to each of the more than 400 known smoke shops in Manhattan, warning them of the potential for eviction proceedings for unlawful cannabis sales.

COVID-19 Vaccination Now Optional for City Workers:
With more than 96 percent of city workers fully vaccinated against COVID-19, Mayor Adams announced that the city will make vaccination optional for current and prospective city workers effective February 10, 2023. While the approximately 1,780 former employees terminated for failing to submit proof of vaccination will not be able to automatically return to their previous positions, they will be able to apply for positions with their former agencies through existing city rules and regulations and hiring processes.
