March is full of things to celebrate — Women’s History Month, St. Patrick’s Day and springtime. Check out some upcoming events and useful family news below.

Upcoming Events      

UFT Lobby Day in Albany
Get on the bus to Albany with fellow parent and caregiver advocates. Together we’ll explain to our state representatives why it’s so important for them to fully fund our local public schools. Email me at drodriguez@uft.org to reserve your space.

Date: Monday, March 13
Time: All day
Where: Albany. Buses will leave from all boroughs.      

District 75 Saturday Music Academy
District 75 students are invited to a free, six-week music course that will include activities with percussion, movement and choral singing. Students should attend with at least one family member.

This will be held in three Queens locations: 9Q@882 in Jamaica, 277Q@404 in Long Island City and 256Q@114 in Rockaway.
Date: Saturdays, March 18 and 25; April 1, 22 and 29; and May 6
Time: 11 a.m. to noon for students in grades K-6;
12:30 to 1:30 p.m. for students in grades 7-12      

Be the Voice: A Conversation on Autism
The UFT’s Queens borough office will host an in-person conversation about autism for parents and caregivers. We’ll discuss challenges and opportunities in schools, the transition to adulthood, adult day services and more.

Our speakers will be Allison Guttu, a pro-bono attorney; Leona S. Fowler, an instructional support teacher in District 75; and Gloria Corsino, a parent advocate and autism advocate. On-site child care will be provided. Breakfast and lunch will be served.

Date: Saturday, April 1
Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: The UFT’s Queens borough office at 118-35 Queens Blvd. Round-trip transportation is available from 151-20 Jamaica Ave.

Free summer getaways from the Fresh Air Fund
The Fresh Air Fund, a nonprofit youth-development organization, provides free, life-changing summer experiences to New York City children, including sleepaway camp and visits with host families in small towns.

Video contest for middle and high school students
The UFT’s Be BRAVE Against Bullying program invites middle and high school students to create videos that are three to five minutes long sharing their experiences with bullying and intolerance. Winners will receive cash prizes for their schools and be honored during an awards ceremony at UFT headquarters in May. Submissions are due by Wednesday, April 19.
