INSTRUCTION

Summer 2023 Global Leaders Academy

DML is partnering with the United Nations to offer the Global Leaders Academy, a five-week paid summer program for high school students beginning July 10. This program is designed to expose multilingual learners and immigrant students to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) while helping them develop their leadership, language, and other critical 21st-century skills.

The program will conclude with students developing and pitching community projects that address these UNSDGs within their community. Please share this flyer with multilingual learners at your school. Interested students should apply using this form by June 30. Contact Florence Dennis (fdennis@schools.nyc.gov) for questions.

Summer 2023: ELLtrepreneurs

DML, in partnership with SpeakHire, Google, and Jamestown, is offering ELLtrepreneurs a comprehensive and inclusive summer work-based learning program this summer. ELLtrepreneurs offers English language learners in grades 10-12 an opportunity to explore their entrepreneurial aspirations, develop essential skills, and gain practical knowledge in a supportive environment.  The program aims to empower ELLs who have business ideas and aspire to build their own company or non-profit organization.

Please share the ELLtrepreneur flyer and program information with ELLs at your school. Interested ELLs should apply using this form by June 30. Please note: the form will close when we have reached the program’s capacity.

Pursue a Bilingual Extension through Extended Certification Programs

Teachers can still apply to pursue a Bilingual Extension through Extended Certification Programs until June 16! Extended Certification Programs empower current NYCPS teachers to pursue a Bilingual Extension (grades PK-12) through the completion of fully subsidized graduate-level coursework. These programs also enable schools to expand the capacity and quality of their teaching staff and ensure that hard-to-staff vacancies are filled by current, veteran teachers in the school’s community. Extended Certification Programs are particularly beneficial to a school with Bilingual Special Education vacancies, as they enable that school’s Special Education teachers to work towards an additional Bilingual Extension during the 23-24 school year!

Accepted candidates will enroll in a cohort either through a partner college or university or through the NYC Specialized Teacher Enhancement Pathway’s (NYC STEP) district-led certification program. After completing their certification program, participants commit to teaching in their new license area for the following two years.

Showcase: Project-Based Learning with ELLs in Mind[BH1]   [BH2]   [BH3]

On Wednesday, May 31, students, families, teachers, and school leaders joined us at Tweed Courthouse to celebrate the amazing projects our multilingual learners completed over the school year, as part of our Project-Based Learning with ELLs in Mind collaborative work.

We loved seeing multilingual learners using their voices, academic agency, and global knowledge to present their projects on different topics – from the war in Ukraine, to water pollution on Coney Island, to creating a Newcomer’s club at their school.

Thank you to the students who showcased their projects and the schools who embraced PBL to support our students’ growth!

Showcase: Literacy for Life Conference

On Thursday, May 25, educators, school leaders, and district staff joined us for our Literacy for Life conference and heard from nationally recognized experts in the field of ELL education and our own NYC Public School colleagues about strong literacy instruction and culturally responsive practices that support multilingual learners. Thank you to our participants and speakers! We are so thankful to hear about your experiences engaging with multilingual learners in and out of the classroom.
