NYC Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit Newsletter – July 10, 2023

Dear fellow New Yorker,

Summer in New York City has finally arrived! It’s a great time for picnics, barbecues, and swims in your local beach or pool.

Free breakfast and lunch are available throughout New York City to anyone ages 18 years old and under. Through September 1, stop by schools, pools, parks, and food trucks at a location near you. Please visit here for more information.

Hot and humid weather is not just uncomfortable, it can cause heat illness and even death. Eligible households can get help to buy and install an air conditioner or fan. The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) provides a limited number of units. Please see here for details.

City pools are open for the summer! Outdoor pool hours are from 11:00 AM through 7:00 PM daily. Please click here to learn more about the city’s pools or to find an outdoor pool near you!

Highlights From the City Hall Press Office:       Status of NYPD Commissioner: We are safer than we were on January 1, 2022, with most major crimes down, and that is thanks, in large part, to Commissioner Keechant Sewell taking a leading role in the Adams administration’s tireless work to make New York City safer. Mayor Adams released a statement on Commissioner Sewell’s last day. Until a permanent replacement is named, Eddie Caban has taken the helm as acting police commissioner. Commissioner Caban has over three decades of service in the NYPD.    “Clean City Alliance” To Provide Sidewalk Cleaning To High-Traffic Commercial Corridors: Mayor Adams, DSNY, and the Sanitation Foundation (DSNY’s official nonprofit) announced a major new philanthropic undertaking focused on cleaning high-traffic commercial corridors across the city. This new initiative will provide sidewalk cleaning to some of the busiest areas that do not have Business Improvement Districts (BID) to help organize cleanliness efforts in all five boroughs. The “Clean City Alliance” will begin by servicing sidewalks in parts of Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy and will expand to other busy commercial corridors without BIDs across the city. The “Clean City Alliance” will also be a source of employment opportunity, hiring locally across the city.
