NYC Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit Newsletter – July 31, 2023

Dear fellow New Yorker,

Mayor Adams hosted a town hall in Sunset Park  last Monday as part of the “Talk with Eric: A Community Conversation” series. New Yorkers from this diverse neighborhood came out to hear about how we’re Getting Stuff Done, and asked about the issues that matter to them.   I joined Mayor Adams as he hosted an Eastern European Cultural reception at Gracie Mansion last Tuesday. The celebration was attended by consul generals and ambassadors from numerous East European nations. The mayor lauded the diverse contributions by New Yorkers of East European heritage to the city’s fabric.

Dominican pride was on display during this year’s Grand Dominican Day Parade in the Bronx. Mayor Adams joined the Dominican community and marched in the parade along Grand Concourse.

Bolivia Independence Day is on August 6th and is known as ‘Dia de la Patria.’ This day marks the signing of Bolivia’s declaration of Independence from Spain in 1825. Felicidades a todos bolivianos!

Jamaica celebrated its independence from British rule on August 6, 1962, following more than 300 years under British control. The highest concentration of Jamaican New Yorkers live mostly in Central Brooklyn and the Northeast Bronx. Happy independence day to all our Jamaican neighbors!

All the best,

Highlights From the City Hall Press Office:

Mayor Unveils Plan to Remove Sheds and Scaffolding: Mayor Adams unveiled “Get Sheds Down,”  a sweeping overhaul of rules governing sidewalk construction sheds and scaffolding that will remove these eyesores from city streets more quickly while redesigning and reimagining those that are needed. These sheds, sometimes called scaffolding, can be a blight on public spaces and foster illegal activity. The “Get Sheds Down” plan will improve public safety and quality of life by removing them more quickly and replacing them, where possible, with more aesthetic or less intrusive alternatives, like safety netting, that keeps New Yorkers safe without creating blight in public space.

Mayor Notches Early Victories in War on Rats: Mayor Adams released new data today showing a  20 percent decrease in 311 calls about rat activity across the city over the last two months, as compared to last year. The significant drop took place from May to mid-July, in the period since the city fully implemented new set-out times and a corresponding collection schedule that minimizes the time trash sits on the curb and increases the use of containers citywide. Additionally, the city’s four rat mitigation zones (Bronx Grand Concourse, Harlem, Bedford-Stuyvesant/Bushwick, and East Village/Chinatown) saw rat sighting calls decrease by an average of more than 45 percent.

Mayor Releases “A Blueprint for Community Safety”: Mayor Adams, First Deputy Mayor Wright, and the New York City Gun Violence Prevention Task Force released “A Blueprint for Community Safety,” outlining a forward-thinking roadmap with upstream solutions to address gun violence throughout the five boroughs. The report builds upon all the work the Adams administration has undertaken over the last 18 months to reduce gun violence by double digits and culminates months of engagement with communities most impacted by gun violence, including young people, whose feedback was critical in shaping the strategies and recommendations that will ensure the city continues to build on the public safety gains made since January 2022.
