New and Updated ML/ELL Resources

Please review the following new and updated resources to support your school’s multilingual learners/English language learners (MLs/ELLs)

Project-Based Learning with ELLs in Mind Collaborative SY 2023-24

Are you interested in participating in the Project-Based Learning with ELLs in Mind Collaborative this school year? During this yearlong series, teams of K-12 social studies, humanities, mathematics, ENL, bilingual teachers, assistant principals, and district leads will be engaged in in-person and virtual sessions to deepen their knowledge around the “what” and “how” of PBL as a vehicle to strengthen the instructional core for linguistically diverse learners. Participants will be invited to take part in focus groups to design, implement, and assess PBL instructional cycles using their own core curriculum to ground the work. For more information, see this flyer. To apply, please complete this form by September 29. CTLE credit is available.

Order Copies of the New Bilingual Postsecondary Glossary for Multilingual Learners

The Postsecondary Glossary for Multilingual Learners is designed to equip students with terms that will help them navigate high school and the postsecondary planning process. Support our most vulnerable multilingual learners in temporary housing with the use of the glossary during 1:1s, advisory sessions, workshops, and content-specific classes. You or your designee can order physical copies of the new Postsecondary Glossary in multiple languages by completing this form by October 6. Lean into this educator’s facilitator guide and a student planning document to fully understand how to use the glossary.

Offer the New York State Seal of Biliteracy for School Year 2023-24

As in previous years, students may earn the New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB) as a diploma endorsement upon graduation, which recognizes high school graduates who attained a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in one or more languages in addition to English. If your school is interested in participating in the NYSSB, you, or your designee, can sign up by completing this form by November 20.

For more information, including resources available to support your school and a how-to guide for the 2023–24 school year, visit the NYSSB InfoHub page. For questions, reach out to your NYSSB District Point.

Guidance on Project Open Arms and Welcoming Newly Arrived MLs/ELLs

With the influx of migrant families arriving to NYC, the City’s Project Open Arms support plan provides wraparound services for new students entering the school system, including academic, social-emotional, and language-access support. For more information, refer to the Project Open Arms InfoHub page; please review this page periodically for ongoing updates.

Additionally, the Division of Multilingual Learners has created a new resource, the First Steps: A Leader’s Resource for Welcoming Newly Arrived ELLs in NYCPS, for school leaders and their teams to ensure that your school has those systems and steps for success in place to welcome newly arrived MLs/ELLs. This resource puts policy into context by helping your school review its intake procedures, make culturally and linguistically informed plans for instructional programs, monitor for progress, and identify comprehensive supports to meet the needs of your newly arrived MLs/ELLs and their families.

As a reminder, the DOE does not ask about or track student immigration status and all resources must be made available to all students. For questions, or additional guidance, contact your superintendent team.
