New Resources to Support Bilingual Education Programs

Schools interested in opening a bilingual education program and those with existing programs should review the following resources to learn about each program model and make informed decisions about which type of program best serves their school community.

·    The Bilingual Education Programs K-12 guide provides school leaders with information about the various bilingual education programs available in NYC Public Schools to make informed decisions that best meet the needs of their school and community.

·    Bilingual Education Building Blocks: Planning and Designing Recommendations for New Programs and accompanying planning tool provides teams with recommendations and strategies that can lead to the development of high-quality, sustainable bilingual education programs. Schools should use the tool to plan at least one year before opening their program, as well as within the first few years to strengthen the program.

For questions on opening a bilingual education program, email your ML/ELL director. For questions on the new resources, email DML@schools.nyc.gov.

Resources to Support You with Teaching and Learning for Your Newly Arrived MLs/ELLs

You can find relevant resources to support newly arrived MLs/ELLs and immigrant students, including newcomer ELLs, on this page on the Multilingual Learners SharePoint. You can also share these resources using this InfoHub document. You are invited to bookmark the page and refer to it periodically to access newly added resources and opportunities.

You can find key resources highlighted below:

·    Project Open Arms: The most up-to-date information about the broader Project Open Arms strategy, including Frequently Asked Questions about the 60-day policy, is available on the Project Open Arms InfoHub page.

·    Instructional Services and Support for Newly Arrived ELLs and SIFE:

o    The First Steps: A Leader’s Resource for Welcoming Newly Arrived ELLs in NYC Public Schools: This resource is designed to be your “one-stop” guide on how to use a team-based approach to support newly arrived ELLs at your school, covering the intake process, the transition to instruction and plans for progress monitoring throughout the year. In addition to instructional support, this resource also covers needs particular to families and community members in temporary housing.

o    Scaffolded Core Curriculum Units: These scaffolded units from the most common core curricula in NYC Public Schools can be used as research-supported models to scaffold units in the curriculum used at your school, as illustrative guides for exploring and examining scaffolding goals across content areas, and as collaborative professional learning tools for teams to use at your school to support newly arrived ELLs.

o    Home Language Use in Diverse Classroom Settings: Whether you offer a bilingual or English as a New Language (ENL) instructional model at your school, providing strategic opportunities for students to use their home language for instruction will help them access content, build confidence in their skills, and validate their cultural and linguistic identities and experiences.

Upcoming Lighthouse Collaborative Visits

Led by the Division of Educator Development, the Lighthouse Collaborative is a cross-district instructional improvement initiative designed to help share strategies that support the Chancellor’s second pillar to scale, sustain, and restore what works across schools. For schools welcoming migrant and asylum-seeking students who are multilingual learners, this is an opportunity for NYCPS educators to learn about promising practices to support teaching and learning for multilingual learners through select visits (see school visits with “Supporting Multilingual Learners” in the Instructional Focus Area). Review all upcoming visits by instructional focus area and grade level. For questions, email lighthouse@schools.nyc.gov
