Dear families,

If your child was born in 2021, they can attend 3-K in fall 2024! Before the 3-K application opens on January 10, we encourage you to learn about the four different settings that offer 3-K. All schools listed in the MySchools directory offer free or low-cost public 3-K.

NYC Early Education Centers (NYCEECs)

NYCEECs are community-based organizations that partner with NYC Public Schools to provide 3-K. Many NYCEECs offer Extended Day and Year or Head Start seats for families who are eligible based on income and needs.

Family Child Care (FCC) Providers

FCCs are home-based programs that offer 3-K in a home setting by a licensed, qualified, child care provider. Each FCC provider works with an FCC Network, which can answer any questions about their individual providers. You can find contact information for the network on each FCC’s Myschools page.

Many FCC providers also offer Extended Day and Year seats for families who are eligible based on income and needs.

District Schools

District Schools are public elementary schools. New York City has 32 school districts; find your school district by entering your address at schoolsearch.schools.nyc Most district schools are zoned schools, meaning that applicants who live in an area zoned for that specific school have priority to attend. Non-zoned schools are those that give priority to all applicants who live in the same district as the school.

Pre-K Centers

Pre-K Centers are run by NYC Public Schools and only offer grades below kindergarten.

For more information about different setting types, please visit our website (schools.nyc.gov/3k). You can also visit a school’s MySchools directory page for more information about the seat types they offer and their admissions priorities, including which students received offers last year.

Families can apply to any program that they are interested in, even if it is outside of their zone or district. However, your child has a higher priority to attend 3-K programs in their district. Due to limited seats, not all applicants will receive an offer.
