Upcoming Multilingual and Immigrant Family Conference on April 17

The Division of Multilingual Learners, in collaboration with community-based organizations, advocates, and education leaders, invites families and school-based staff to attend the Multilingual and Immigrant Family Conference on April 17 from 10AM – 4PM at Intrepid Museum, Pier 86, W 46th St, New York, NY 10036. Giveaways, resource tables, guest speakers and workshops will be provided to promote multilingualism and advocacy for our families and ensure they understand their rights.

Backpack home this translated flyer to students and share it with your staff.  Interested participants should register for the conference and sessions by April 8.

We strongly encourage schools to support families’ transportation to the event via their available yellow buses. Families will be provided with MetroCards after the event. Schools will receive an email from divisionofmultilinguallearners@schools.nyc.gov with an update on the number of families who registered to attend for further outreach and coordination. For questions, email DML@schools.nyc.gov.

Opportunity to Celebrate National World Languages Week

The DOE is participating in a week-long celebration for National World Languages Week from March 18–22. This year’s theme is “Learning Languages Promotes Friendship.” You and your staff are invited to use and share these resources within your school community.

Additionally, you can continue celebrating world languages throughout the rest of the year by saving the date for a virtual World Languages Conference on June 6. Bookmark this World Languages Google page to learn more about key resources and upcoming professional learning opportunities.

You are invited to celebrate the language diversity and inclusivity by tagging the DOE and @NYCMultilingual on X, using the hashtag #NYCWorldLang when posting (in accordance with DOE Digital Citizenship and Social Media Guidelines).

For questions, email DML@schools.nyc.gov.

Administer the NYC School Survey

Every year, we ask all families, teachers, and staff in grades 3-K through 12, and students in grades 6-12 to take the NYC School Survey. The survey gives school leaders a better understanding of what members of their school community think about their school. The information collected by the survey is designed to support a dialogue among all members of the school community about how to make the school a better place to learn.

The 2024 NYC School Survey launched on February 12 and will close on April 5, 2024. To take the survey, visit nycschoolsurvey.org. Families can also access the survey by logging into their NYC Schools Account.

Translations

The online survey for parents/guardians and students is provided in English as well as nine additional languages offered by the NYCPS: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, French, Haitian Creole, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Urdu. Schools can assist parents/guardians and families who are unable to read or have limited English proficiency, but it is imperative that your school staff be mindful of the confidential nature of the survey and extremely careful not to (a) influence survey responses in any way or (b) attempt to review survey responses. For more guidance on ethical survey administration, please review the Ethics Reference Guide on the NYC School Survey Infohub.

For more resources regarding survey administration, review the NYC School Survey InfoHub page. For questions, email surveys@schools.nyc.gov.

[Reminder] Refer Teachers for Extended Certification Programs for the 2024-25 School Year

New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) is offering Extended Certification Programs for the 2024-25 school year, supporting current NYCPS teachers to pursue an additional Students with Disabilities certificate or Bilingual Extension through the completion of subsidized, graduate-level coursework. Learn more about how Extended Certification Programs benefit your school.

You may refer interested teacher candidates by completing the Extended Certification Programs and NYC STEP Referral Form by March 28.  Eligible teachers from the referral list will then receive an invitation to complete the Extended Certification Programs application once it opens in the Spring.

In addition, principals and hiring managers are invited to register to attend a webinar on MS Teams to learn more about Extended Certification Programs from 9:00-9:30 a.m. on February 28.

For additional guidance on Extended Certification Programs, please consult with your Director of Special Education and ML/ELL Director or submit questions to HIRE Connections.

Upcoming Lighthouse Collaborative Visits

Led by the Division of Educator Development, the Lighthouse Collaborative is a cross-district instructional improvement initiative designed to help share strategies that support the Chancellor’s second pillar to scale, sustain, and restore what works across schools. For schools welcoming migrant and asylum-seeking students who are multilingual learners, this is an opportunity for NYCPS educators to learn about promising practices to support teaching and learning for multilingual learners through select visits (see school visits with “Supporting Multilingual Learners” in the Instructional Focus Area). Review all upcoming visits by instructional focus area and grade level. For questions, email lighthouse@schools.nyc.gov
