Resources to Engage with NYC Public Schools

Dear New Yorkers,

This May, I’ll be marking a special milestone in my time as Chancellor: I will have attended town hall meetings for all 36 Community and Citywide Education Councils (CECs). These meetings, which are open to the entire community, have been a highlight for me over the past two-plus years. I’ve seen incredible student performances, answered thoughtful questions from parents and staff, and shared details about key initiatives like NYC Reads.

CEC meetings are a terrific way to learn more about what’s going on in your district, but they are not the only way. In this week’s PS + You, I want to share a few additional resources to engage with our city’s schools:

  • The Morning Bell is a new blog on our NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) website, updated weekly with important information and stories about what is happening right now in our schools, as well as resources to support your child’s learning journey. Each month, you will find book recommendations for all grades, a preview of key dates and deadlines in the month ahead, and a comprehensive list of student opportunities. The Morning Bell also gets you inside the classroom with stories and profiles about our schools, staff members, and students that you won’t find anywhere else.
  • Parent University, or Parent U, is an online course management platform and resource system where NYC families can register for free training on topics ranging from college preparation to special education to mental health. Content is available on-demand, 24 hours a day, so families have flexibility to participate any time they’d like. If there’s a course you can’t find on Parent U that you’d like to see, we encourage you to send us your recommendations at ParentU@schools.nyc.gov.
  • Finally, our social media pages are another great way to stay in the loop. For the latest NYCPS news, follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and X.

On the theme of getting involved, I also want to express my appreciation to the many parent and family volunteers who support our schools every day. April 21-27 is National Volunteer Week, so when we return from Spring Break, make sure to thank the volunteers who lend a helping hand at your school.

Soaring high,

David C. Banks

Chancellor
