UFT statement on the DOE’s class size reduction plan
Dear parents and caregivers, I’m happy to share with you that the DOE has published a class size reduction plan that acknowledges the $2 billion needed to make the improvements required by law. Here is the UFT’s statement on the plan: “This plan acknowledges for the first time that $2 billion needs to be added to the capital plan, commits the DOE to fund class sizes without cutting programs, and supports modest gains to make the 40 percent thresholds the law requires this fall. The real work, and progress, demands a commitment going forward to correctly fund each school to follow the law and to identify and build new seats where needed,” said Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers |
I want to thank you for all your advocacy efforts that got us this far. Thank you for making phone calls, writing letters, joining the UFT for our annual lobby day and advocating in your communities for the full resources needed to enforce the law and make smaller class sizes a reality. I look forward to continuing to work together in the coming school year to make sure each school has the funding it needs to give our kids the smaller class sizes they deserve without compromising needed programs. Your voices matter. In unity, Nick |
