Dear Families,

The high school application is now open and the deadline to apply is Wednesday, December 4, 2024Current eighth-grade (and interested first-time ninth grade) students in NYC can apply.
Here’s how:

    1. Log into your MySchools account to explore high schools and apply

  • If you used MySchools to apply to schools in the past, your account is still active. You can log in using the same email address used then.
  • If you do not have an active account, you will need a unique account creation code to access your child’s high school application. This is printed on your child’s welcome letter, which you can get from their school counselor.
  • Need help creating an account? Watch this tutorial.

     2. Learn about high schools and their admissions programs.

  • Explore Programs: Search MySchools.nyc for programs based on interest, location, and more. Each program’s page includes information on how it makes offers and if you need to complete any additional steps, such as an audition or additional task. On our website, learn how to audition (schools.nyc.gov/HSAuditions) and how students get offers to screened programs (schools.nyc.gov/ScreenedHS).
  • Visit Schools: Learn about schools of interest by attending an open house or school tour. You can check the MySchools’ event calendar (myschools.nyc/calendar) to find open houses and information sessions. You can also visit a school’s website or contact them directly to find out more.

      3. Make sure to apply by December 4

  • Add 12 choices to your child’s application in MySchools. List these choices in your true order of preference, with your top choice as #1
  • New this year! We encourage applicants to submit a complete application of 12 choices. However, if a family has additional programs of interest, they can add them to their application as a thirteenth choice, fourteenth choice, and so on. There is no limit to how many programs you can list.
  • New this year! MySchools now projects whether an applicant has a low, medium, or high chance of getting an offer to particular high school programs. Use this information to build a balanced application that includes high-chance programs for your child. Note, this option is only available for current 8th grade students. Learn more here: schools.nyc.gov/offerchances
  • You can submit your high school application one of the following ways:

Please note that the nine Specialized High Schools (schools.nyc.gov/SHS) have separate admissions processes that also open today! These schools will not show up as options on the general high school application.

  • LaGuardia High School has its own application in MySchools. If you are interested, complete the LaGuardia application and submit your audition by Wednesday, December 4– learn more about the audition process here: schools.nyc.gov/HSAuditions
  • The remaining Specialized High Schools admit students based on their scores on the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT).
    • Registration for the SHSAT is now open. To apply to any or all of these schools, submit your registration, including your school preferences, by Friday, October 18. Practice tests, test dates, and test locations are available at schools.nyc.gov/SHS
    • Later this fall, registered students will receive a personalized test ticket confirming when and where they take the test in November or December.

Attend one of our live, virtual, admissions events!

Please make sure that you join one of our virtual admissions sessions. During these sessions, we will provide an overview of the admissions process, from how to access your MySchools account to the best way to complete your application.

Visit schools.nyc.gov/HS for more information and the full list of events.

Need support with your MySchools account, your child’s unique account creation code or your application? Have other admissions questions? We’re here to help! Talk to your child’s school counselor, come to an admissions event, or contact a Family Welcome Center(schools.nyc.gov/FWC).
