Dear family,

Have a child born in 2019?  If so, they are eligible to attend pre-K in fall of 2023!  Before the application opens in late January, we encourage you to learn about the different seat types offered in pre-K programs. There are three seat types with different eligibility requirements.  Your family may be eligible for more than one seat type.

  • School Day seats are open to all NYC children born in 2019.  These seats are free and provide early care and education for 6 hours and 20 minutes per day during the school year (typically September to June).  This seat type is offered in all pre-K settings (NYC Early Education Centers, District Schools and Pre-K Centers).
  • Extended Day and Year seats are free or low cost and provide up to 10 hours of early care and education a day, year-round, including the summer.  Eligibility for Extended Day and Year seats is based on family income and needs and is confirmed by completing a Child Care application.   This seat type is only offered at NYC Early Education Centers.
  • Head Start seats are free and provide up to 10 hours of early care and education a day, year-round, including the summer.  Eligibility for Head Start seats is based on family income and needs and the program will work with you directly to confirm eligibility.  This seat type is offered only at NYC Early Education Centers.

You can learn more information about eligibility for Extended Day and Year and Head Start seats by visiting our website at nyc.gov/prek, and clicking the section titled “Enrollment for Pre-K Extended Day and Year Seats, and for Pre-K Head Start Seats”.

The longer hours of early care and education offered at Extended Day and Year and Head Start seats are different than after-school options; families must be found eligible for these seats.  Some programs do offer early drop off and/or late pick up services for School Day seats.  You can use the “More Filters” filter on the Pre-K Directory to find these options.

Some programs offer more than one seat type, and you can list them all as options on your application. We recommend only applying to seat types where you believe your family may be eligible.  Your child may not attend an Extended Day and Year or Head Start programs if your family does not meet the eligibility requirements.
